Its first floor will accommodate school groups for discussions of pioneer life in Tazewell County and Southwest Virginia. It will be available for other educational and civic meetings.
The original building, constructed between 1825 and 1835, is thought to have been an overnight stopping place along a stage road.
The grant is the largest contribution toward the project so far. Donations totaling $16,000 allowed the building to be put under roof, but about $15,000 still must be raised for porches, fireplace, chimney, electrical service, handicapped access and other work. - Southwest bureau
