CHINESE LEADER MAY HAVE HAD HEART ATTACK

Prime Minister Li Peng has disappeared from public view, and is believed to have suffered a heart attack that may keep him from running the country for weeks or months.

Officials say Li is suffering from a cold. But a Chinese person with access to high-level information said Li had suffered a heart attack and was recuperating in an army hospital.

Li, 64, has not been seen for nearly three weeks. His absence is likely to heighten a power struggle. Senior officials like Li are already jockeying for position in the succession struggle expected after the death of Deng Xiaoping, the senior leader, who will turn 89 in August. - The New York Times
