CLINIC SET SATURDAY FOR TENNIS COACHES

The Roanoke Parks and Recreation Department will hold a free clinic Saturday for those interested in being coaches for the new U.S. Tennis Association Junior Team Tennis Program this summer.

The clinic will be from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the River's Edge Sports Complex.

Coaches are needed for youths between 8 and 18 with varying skill levels. Teams will be based in neighborhoods throughout the city, and coaches need not have previous team tennis experience.

Charley Turner Open set June 10-13 in Salem

The 15th annual Charley Turner Open Tennis Tournament will be held June 10-13 at the Salem Civic Center tennis courts. Deadline for entry is June 3.

The tournament, sponsored by the Salem Parks and Recreation Department, is open to people of all ages and skill levels. Entry forms are available at sporting goods stores, athletic clubs, country clubs and by mail. The entry fee is $10 for adult singles, $15 per team for adult doubles, $8 for youth singles and $10 per team for youth doubles.

There will be various divisions for men, women and children. Each player may enter up to two divisions.

Roanoke gymnasts win individual, team awards

Taryn Bianco won three individual state championships, and Holly Saunders qualified for regional competition to help give the Roanoke Academy of Gymnastics a strong showing in the recent Level 7 Optional, Level 8 State Championship May 2 in Burke.

Bianco won vault, bars and beam in the 12-year-old age group as the academy's Level 7 team won 11 individual medals and placed third in the team competition. Bianco, April Conner, Beth Harms, Kristen Jekielek, Maureen Jekielek, Mandy McCall, Nikki Reynolds and Beth Spillen combined to win the team bronze.

Conner placed second in bars and vault, third all-around and fourth in floor in the 13-year-old age group.

Saunders placed third in floor, fourth in vault and fifth all-around to qualify for Level 8 Regionals this weekend in Maryland.

Karate students place in Battle of Atlanta

American Freestyle Karate in Salem has announced its winners from the Battle of Atlanta, held April 24. The meet had more than 2,200 competitors.

Chris Sams, 11, of Pyrtle Drive, Salem, placed first out of 35 competitors in the 11- to 12-year-old division, advanced belt forms.

Jason Seligman, 16, of Clara Drive, placed first out of 25-30 competitors in the 15- to 17-year-old division for advanced belt fighting and second in junior advanced weapons.

Rex Cauldwell, 46, of Copper Hill, placed third out of 25-30 in senior advanced fighting and fifth in senior advanced forms. Cauldwell will compete in Russia in June.
