ROANOKE COUNTY PLANS SURPLUS-FOOD GIVEAWAY

The Roanoke County Department of Social Services will distribute surplus food Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Roanoke County Administration Building, 3738 Brambleton Ave. S.W.

Items to be given away include butter, peanut butter, canned pork, orange juice, flour, rice and raisins.

People who receive food stamps or meet income eligibility requirements and live in Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County or Vinton are eligible. For more information, call Betty McCrary at 387-6237 or 387-6087.

Hamlar to receive humanitarian award

Total Action Against Poverty will present the second annual Noel C. Taylor Humanitarian award to Lawrence H. Hamlar tonight at the Henry Street Music center, 110 First St. N.W.

The program will feature tributes by G. Frank Clement, Marilyn Curtis and Norman Fintel.

"A Show of Hands for TAP" will be unveiled, featuring original works of art by Vera Dickerson, Kathleen Lunsford, Marcia McDade, Bill White, Ad 2 members, Roanoke magnet school students and TAP's Head Start children.

Exhibitors needed for church festival

Exhibitors of artwork, crafts and cars are needed for Masons Cove Church of the Brethren's third annual Festival and Car Show, scheduled May 22 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Art and craft spaces cost $10 each. New and antique cars may be entered for $5 per vehicle.

`Spring on the Lake' is for cancer survivors

Women who have had cancer are invited to the second annual "Spring on the Lake," a weekend of relaxation scheduled May 21 and 22 at the Smith Mountain Lake 4-H Center.

The retreat, a celebration of health and empowerment over cancer, is sponsored by the Lewis-Gale Regional Cancer Center, Lewis-Gale Clinic and the American Cancer Society.

Last year, about 30 women participated in the first Spring on the Lake. Activities include music, skits, massage and sharing of information and experiences.

The weekend costs $50 per person, which includes food, lodging and transportation. Scholarships are available. The registration deadline is Friday. For more information, call Vicki Stinette at 776-4860.

Roanoke County, Salem to combine court intake

The 23rd District Court Service Unit will combine intake services for the Juvenile and Domestic Relations courts of Roanoke County and Salem on Monday.

All intake services for the law-enforcement agencies of Roanoke County, Vinton and Salem will be handled at the Salem Courthouse, 2 E. Calhoun St.

Officials say that combining these services will enable citizens and law-enforcement officers to meet with an intake officer with less delay. Parking also will be improved.

The move, however, will not affect the work of the Roanoke County Juvenile and Domestic Relations clerk's office. Papers filed directly with the clerk, court hearings and the payment of fines, court costs and other fees will remain at the Roanoke County Courthouse, 305 E. Main St., Salem.

State Eastern Star to convene Sunday

A church service Sunday afternoon will mark the opening of the 89th annual session of the Grand Chapter of Virginia, Order of the Eastern Star.

The service will be at 4:30 p.m. at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church, 402 Second St. S.W. Other activities for the session, which runs through Wednesday, will be held at the Roanoke Civic Center coliseum.

Helen P. Tripp of New Castle is completing her term as worthy grand matron, and James R. Bowyer of Bedford is ending his term as worthy grand patron.

The order will award $34,500 in college scholarships and give donations to the Arthritis Foundation, Eastern Star Home in Richmond, cancer research, the Heart Foundation and Knights Templar Eye Foundation.

Grandin Court Baptist enrolling preschoolers

Grandin Court Baptist Preschool is accepting registration for the 1993-94 school year.

The school at 2660 Brambleton Ave. S.W. holds classes from 9 a.m. until noon daily from September through May. It offers a two-day program for 3-year-olds for $50 a month. Children ages 4 and 5 can go three days a week for $62 a month or five days a week for $80 a month.

Agency for the disabled names 2 new directors

Chance Crawford and Sara Rubush have been appointed to the board of directors of the Blue Ridge Independent Living Center.

Crawford is clerk of the Circuit Court in Salem, and Rubush is a librarian with the Roanoke Public Library system.

Families with multiples to organize new club

A club for parents of twins and triplets is being formed to provide support, education and a social outlet for the family.

The Roanoke Valley Parents of Multiples Club will meet the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church, 2505 Electric Road. An organizational meeting will be held May 24.

Natural foods co-op elects board officers

Four women were re-elected to the board of directors of the Roanoke Natural Foods Co-Op at its spring general membership meeting.

Freeda Cathcart, vice-president; Teresa Dobbie, treasurer; Alice Hanawalt, secretary; and Rebecca Talbot were returned to the board. Mary Clifford was elected to the open seat.

Three openings, including president, will be up for election in the fall.
