USAir trims fares on Northeast routes

ARLINGTON - USAir announced lower fares Wednesday for business and leisure travelers in 286 non-stop Northeast markets.

The airline said the changes are not across-the-board promotional discounts, but a selective restructuring of short-distance fares. The cuts involve all USAir jet and most USAir Express flights from Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Boston, Philadelphia, New York LaGuardia, Washington, Baltimore, Newark and Hartford to cities less than 750 miles away.

There is a new type of business fare, and 14-day advance-purchase excursion fares were cut an average 28 percent.

Black-owned firms outperformed others

NEW YORK - Black-owned big businesses outperformed many other companies last year, helped by an auto dealer rebound and successes ranging from a food distributor to a hip-hop clothier, Black Enterprise reports.

The monthly magazine also cites the survival abilities developed by many of these businesses, which historically have faced much rougher operating conditions than their mainstream competitors.

The magazine, which has been compiling data on black-owned companies for 21 years, reported its 1992 rankings Wednesday in the June issue.

Black Enterprise said revenues at the 100 biggest industrial and service businesses in its tally rose 13.9 percent last year. By contrast, revenues for the Fortune 500 industrial and service companies last year rose 4.4 percent.

The magazine calculated a 2.8 percent work force reduction among the 100 biggest industrial and service companies on its list. Employment among the 100 biggest black-owned auto dealerships rose 3.6 percent, it said.
