HERCULES PLANS TOXIC-MATERIALS DISPOSAL BUSINESS

Hercules Inc., the government contractor at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant, has formed a subsidiary that will specialize in the disposal of hazardous materials generated from aging or obsolete stockpiles of military weapons.

Global Environmental Solutions Inc. will be headquartered in Wilmington, Del., but also will do some work at the Radford arsenal.

Nicole Kinser, public affairs officer for the arsenal, said the company will not be operational until June.

Kinser said she did not know how many workers the new company will hire, but that it's possible some of the laid off arsenal workers could be rehired. The arsenal has laid off more than 1,000 people in the last year.

In addition to Radford and Wilmington, GES also will do some work in Salt Lake City.
