VIKINGS BOYS WIN BLUE RIDGE TRACK

Northside's Jonathan Stewart set a meet record in the 800-meter run and ran a leg on the record-setting 1,600-meter relay as the Vikings won the Blue Ridge District track meet Thursday at Salem High School.

Stewart ran the 800 in 1 minute, 59.4 seconds, and Northside's relay team ran 1,600 meters in 3:32.2.

Northside totaled 143 points to second-place Salem's 131. The competition was spread out over Wednesday and Thursday. In other boys' action Thursday, Salem's Keith Moyer won the 200-meter dash, adding to his victory in the 100 meters Wednesday.

In the girls' meet, Rockbridge County's Kady Schnieter won the 800 meters and aided the winning 1,600-meter relay team as the Wildcats won the team competition.

Rockbridge County totaled 124 points to second-place Alleghany's 111.

In other track:

At Abingdon on Wednesday, Lee's girls barely edged Marion 127-122 for the Highlands' District title. The Scarlet Hurricane's effort was paced by Julie Pickle who had first place finishes in the 100-meter hurdles (15.9 seconds), 300-meter hurdles (48.2) and the long jump (16 feet, 1 1/2 inches). Pickle also was fourth in the triple jump and third in the 200.

Pickle's main help came from Sallie Lefler who won the 100 (12.9 seconds), the 200 (26.4 seconds) and the 400 (1:02.2).

In the boys part, Virginia High won with 138 points while Marion finished last with 22 points.

\ BASEBALL: At Laurel Park on Wednesday, Fieldale-Collinsville (14-2-, 14-2-1) defeated Laurel Park 11-0 in a Piedmont District game as Brian Mays pitched a one-hitter, struck out seven and walked one. Mays allowed a bunt single in the fifth inning to Chad Mellott. Mays also went 3-for-4 at bat. Spencer Johnson and Todd Tringle also had two hits for the Cavaliers, who are second to unbeaten Tunstall.

Wednesday, at Marion, the Scarlet Hurricane beat John Battle 6-2 in a Highlands District game. Jimmy Morrison pitched a four-hitter and struck out 10 for the win. Jim Moxley, Jason Leffler and Jeff Keheley each had two hits for the winners. Marion is 4-7, 4-4.

\ SOCCER: On Wednesday, William Byrd (12-2, 10-0) completed an unbeaten Blue Ridge District season by bombing Rockbridge County 11-0 Wednesday. Jason Criss had the shutout in goal. Rockbridge County finished 1-9 in the district.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: At River's Edge, Patrick Henry (8-2-1) defeated Martinsville 5-3 as Carrie Moore scored three goals for the Patriots.

\ TENNIS: Martinsville's Brian Biga and Magna Vista's Paul Gallimore helped their teams advance in the first round of the Piedmont District boys' tennis tournament at Magna Vista High School.

Biga won a team singles match and an individual singles match as Martinsville beat Gretna 7-0; Gallimore won in team singles and doubles as Magna Vista beat Patrick County 5-2.

Biga defeated Brandon Atkinson of Gretna 10-8 in one quarter-final while Gallimore's individual singles match was suspended by rain with him leading Patrick County's Chad Marion 6-2. It will resume Monday along with the team semifinals. The finals are Wednesday.

Salem swept the boys and girls competition at the Blue Ridge District tennis finals Wednesday at the Salem Civic Center.

Edel Veloso defeated Jay Gilliland of Lord Botetourt 6-3, 6-2 for the boys' singles crown and then teamed with David Arnold to defeat Aaron Church and Jeremy Gray of Northside 7-5, 6-1 for the doubles title.

Salem's Jill Archer was also a two-time winner. In singles she defeated Erin Fox of Rockbridge County 6-3, 6-4 and teamed with Ashley McCrary to defeat Fox and Mary Cecil 7-6, 3-6, 7-5 for the doubles championship.

The winners advance to Region 3 competition. The girls compete May 18-19 at Salem; the boys will play May 21-22 at Fieldale-Collinsville.
