BLACKSBURG BOYS WIN SOCCER TITLE

Blacksburg clinched the New River District regular-season soccer title with a 4-1 victory at Christiansburg on Thursday.

Augie Niles, Sam Nokuri, Todd Lyons and Scott Bates scored for the Indians (12-0-1 overall, 4-0 in the district); Chris Evans and Ben Cherry had assists.

Daniel Fisher scored for Christiansburg (9-4-1, 2-2). The Demons play Radford at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Blacksburg in the district tournament; the Indians play host to the winner of that game at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the district championship.

In other high school action:

\ BASEBALL: At Forest, Jefferson Forest's Anthony Poindexter pitched a four-hitter and struck out seven in beating Amherst 5-0. The Cavaliers' victory leaves both teams at 12-3 and tied for first in the Seminole District. Scott Spencer drove in two runs with a single in the second inning and Teddy Wilson had a two-run homer in the fifth.

At Riner, Christiansburg (4-11) defeated Auburn 2-0 in a non-district game as Jason Basham got the win by striking out 10. He allowed three hits and walked four in the game shortened to five innings by rain. Auburn's Jereme West took the tough loss despite striking out nine while allowing just four hits. Auburn is 6-9.

\ TRACK: Northside's Jonathan Stewart set a meet record in the 800-meter run and ran a leg on the record-setting 1,600-meter relay as the Vikings won the Blue Ridge District track meet at Salem.

Stewart ran the 800 in 1 minute, 59.4 seconds, and Northside's relay team ran 1,600 meters in 3:32.2.

Northside totaled 143 points to second-place Salem's 131. The competition was cut short Wednesday by rain. In other boys' action Thursday, Salem's Keith Moyer won the 200-meter dash, adding to his victory in the 100 meters Wednesday.

In the girls' meet, Rockbridge County's Kady Schnieter won the 800 meters and aided the winning 1,600-meter relay team as the Wildcats won the team competition.

Rockbridge County totaled 124 points to second-place Alleghany's 111.

At Fleming, the Colonels swept Franklin County in boys' and girls' Roanoke Valley District meets. The Fleming boys won 75-57 as Leroy Witt had firsts in the 100- and 200-yard dashes while anchoring the winning 400-yard relay teams.

In the girls' meet, Fleming won 66-63 as Keyshia Anderson won the 220- and the 400-yard dashes while anchoring the winning 400-yard relay team.

\ LACROSSE: At Roanoke College in Salem, Todd Pasfield had two goals, including the game winner, as Vinton defeated Patrick Henry 5-3 in the championship game of the Roanoke Valley High School Lacrosse League. Vinton (12-4, 7-1) got 12 saves from goalie Kirk Lancaster. It was the second straight league title for Vinton.
