'94 CALENDAR MEANT TO CUT SPRING BREAK EXPECTATIONS

In an effort to reinforce the idea that spring break exists at the pleasure of Mother Nature, the Roanoke County School Board approved a calendar for next year that schedules the annual holiday to straddle a weekend.

Assistant Superintendent Deanna Gordon told board members at an April 22 meeting the unusual scheduling tactic would force parents to recognize that spring break days may be lost to make up for snow days.

"This should reduce the expectations for families and staff that they could just schedule a full week to be away," Gordon told the board.

Board members unanimously approved the calendar, which gives students and teachers a break from March 31 to April 6. Students get an extra day off March 30, which has been scheduled as a teacher workday.

Unless, of course, it snows.
