JURY SENTENCES MAN TO 40 YEARS FOR CONDOM RAPE

A man convicted of raping a woman who had asked the armed intruder to use a condom was sentenced by a jury Friday to 40 years in prison.

Prosecutors had asked the jury to send a positive message to rape victims by giving a life sentence to Joel Valdez, 28.

Under the 40-year sentence, Valdez will be eligible for parole in 10 years. A first-time offender, he had faced anywhere from probation to life in prison after the eight-woman, four-man jury convicted him Thursday.
