Rebecca Grube of Virginia won the 200-meter dash and the 100-meter hurdles to take a 117-point lead in the first day of heptathlon competition at the East Coast Athletic Conference women's track and field championships in Fairfax.
Grube, a sophomore, also finished second in the shot put to establish her lead after four events over Najuma Fletcher of Pittsburgh. Grube finished 10th in the long jump to compile 3,234 points.
Edward E. "Ed" Jones, 58, a former William and Mary baseball coach who was inducted into the school's sports hall of fame in April, died Thursday.
Jones led William and Mary to 122 victories in eight seasons, making him the winningest coach in school history. He helped the 1983 team to a 24-15 school record and the Tribe's only NCAA tournament appearance.
Amy Lofstedt, who will be a junior next year at Virginia, was among 32 players invited to the USA Basketball women's junior-national team trials May 22-27 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Lofstedt, a 6-foot-1 forward, averaged 6.0 points and 3.3 rebounds as a sophomore.
