TECH DECATHLETE LEADS METRO COMPETITORS

Dave Hannett of Virginia Tech won the 100-meter dash and leads the men's decathlon competition at the Metro Conference track and field championships in Tampa, Fla.

Hannett ran the 100 in 11.04 seconds and has 3,475 points after five events.

Heidi Allen of Tech won the women's 10,000-meter run and Tom Lankowicz of the Hokies finished second in the men's 10,000 meters. Dorthea Ku of Virginia Tech is third after the first day of heptathlon competition. Spencer Miller of Tech was third in the men's hammer throw.

Rebecca Grube of Virginia won the 200-meter dash and the 100-meter hurdles to take a 117-point lead in the first day of heptathlon competition at the East Coast Athletic Conference women's track and field championships in Fairfax.

Edward E. "Ed" Jones, 58, a former William and Mary baseball coach who was inducted into the school's sports hall of fame in April, died Thursday.

Jones led William and Mary to 122 victories in eight seasons, making him the winningest coach in school history.

Amy Lofstedt, who will be a junior next year at Virginia, was among 32 players invited to the USA Basketball women's junior-national team trials May 22-27 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Virginia was tied for fifth place after the first round of the Wofford Invitational golf tournament in Spartanburg, S.C. Simon Cooke and Jimmy Flippen shot 1-over-par 73 for UVa.
