C.D. Polumbo scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh on an error by Cavaliers pitcher Chad Shelton. Shelton overthrew third base trying to pick off Polumbo.
Chris Carr (5-0) earned a complete-game victory for William Byrd (15-0, 8-0). He struck out nine, scattered seven hits and walked none.
In other baseball:
At Calfee Park in Pulaski, pinch hitter Billy Cole tripled to lead off the seventh inning and scored on a wild pitch as Cave Spring defeated Pulaski County 2-1 in a Roanoke Valley District game. Doug Kenney went 2-for-3 with a RBI for the Knights (12-4, 9-1). Jamie Arnold struck out 10 in a losing effort for the Cougars (3-12, 2-8).
Glenvar's Trevor Willis broke open a close game with a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Highlanders went on to score seven runs with two outs and beat Craig County 8-5 in a Pioneer District game on the Highlanders' field.
Glenvar (6-4-1, 6-2) has a six-game winning streak.
Tommy Lee hurled a four-hitter, striking out six, and Ryan Blevins stroked a two-run home run as Salem held off Rockbridge County 4-2 in a Blue Ridge District game on the Spartans' diamond. Salem is 8-8 overall, 2-7.
David Dixon's two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning tied the score and his two-out run-scoring single in the fifth put Alleghany ahead for good as the Mountaineers beat guest Northside 5-3 in a Blue Ridge District game. Kelly Dampeer stole home and Ben Taylor had a two run home run for Northside (5-4 in the district).
\ SOFTBALL: Michelle Hudson tossed a no-hitter and Patty Campbell had three hits including two doubles, scored three runs, and drove in two more as Franklin County crushed Patrick Henry 15-0 in a Roanoke Valley District game on the Eagles' field.
Hudson (10-4), who tossed back-to-back one-hitters in her previous two starts, struck out six and walked one. She lost a perfect game with two outs in the fifth.
Janell Sowers threw a five-hitter for Lord Botetourt to lead the Cavaliers to a 5-2 defeat of William Byrd in a Blue Ridge District game. Shannon Deel singled in two runs in the sixth inning to seal the victory for Lord Botetourt (11-3 overall, 7-1 in the district). Ashley Moore added a double and a triple with two RBI. William Byrd is 10-5, 5-4.
Renee Capostein was the winning pitcher and hit two home runs as Cave Spring pounded William Fleming 21-3 in a Roanoke Valley District game. Cave Spring is 12-2, 7-0; William Fleming is 0-13, 0-7.
Michelle Harrison, Rhonda Rankin and Yo Helm each had four hits, and Salem hammered homestanding Rockbridge County 29-0 in a Blue Ridge District game.
Stacy Byrd's two-out run-scoring single with the bases loaded in the ninth inning lifted Northside to a 5-4 Blue Ridge District victory over guest Alleghany. Northside is 4-9, 2-7.
\ TRACK: Daniel Peery won the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles as James River captured the Pioneer District track meet at Glenvar.
The Knights scored 146 1/2 points, followed by Glenvar with 123.
In the girls' meet, Bath County won seven events to take the title. Kathie Burns and Tiphoney Wagner won two events each to lead Bath County. Burns captured the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs and Wagner won the high jump and triple jump.
The Chargers finished with 136 points, 44 points ahead of Glenvar.
\ TENNIS: Thursday at Radford University, Patrick Henry's Andrew Thomas defeated Ben Gold of Cave Spring for the Roanoke Valley District title 6-4, 6-4. On the way to the semis Thomas defeated Pulaski County's Phillip Boyd 6-2, 6-1 and Gold beat Albert Collier of William Fleming 6-1, 7-5.
In the opening match of the team competition, Pulaski County edged William Fleming 5-4 before being crushed 9-0 by Cave Spring in the semifinals. In the other semifinal match, Patrick Henry upended Franklin County 6-3.
In for the individual doubles semifinals, Albert Collier and Rogerick Allen of Fleming knocked off Andy Thomas and Jay Bonds of Patrick Henry 3-6, 6-4, 6-0; Ben Gold and Pete Monahan of Cave Spring defeated Phillip Boyd and Tim Rigney of Pulaski County 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Collier and Allen stopped Gold and Monahan 6-4, 6-3 for the doubles title.
The team finals pitting Cave Spring and Patrick Henry are at River's Edge today at 10 a.m.
\ SOCCER: Justin Brittle had six saves to record his second shutout and Brandon Bourne was credited with a goal that actually was a defensive lapse as Cave Spring beat Pulaski County in a Roanoke Valley District game on the Knights field.
With the win, Cave Spring (8-4-1 overall, 6-2 in the district) earned a first-place tie with Patrick Henry to end the regular season. The playoff game to determine the regular season champion will be played 5 p.m. Monday at Franklin County High.
Goalkeepers Chris Andres and Kevin Schug were the standouts as Patrick Henry and Blacksburg fought to a scoreless standoff at River's Edge.
