The unidentified man apparently was above the lawn mower on a bank in the 1900 block of Broad Street when he slipped and his foot went under the mower, said Emergency Medical Services Capt. Chuck Carroll.
The man was transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he was to undergo surgery, a nursing supervisor said. It was not known if doctors would be able to reattach the toes.
Carroll said it was the second similar accident in two weeks. "It's a relatively common accident," he said.
