JMU BASEBALL COACH HEATWOLE STEPS DOWN

James Madison baseball coach Ray Heatwole resigned Saturday and was replaced by an assistant, the college announced.

Heatwole's departure was "a mutual agreement," James Madison assistant sports information director Curt Dudley said.

"This program averaging 30 wins a year was just not meeting the goals he had set for himself," Dudley said.

Heatwole compiled a 100-88-1 record in four years as head coach. The Dukes finished the 1993 regular season last week with a 22-22-1 record.

Heatwole, 49, was replaced by assistant coach Kevin Anderson.

Heatwole will accompany the team to the Colonial Athletic Association tournament on Wednesday in Wilmington, N.C.

Anderson, 31, has been an assistant at James Madison for two years. He previously coached at George Mason and East Carolina.

Heatwole served four years as an assistant before taking the top job. He previously coached at Turner Ashby High School in Dayton and twice was voted the Virginia High School Coach's Association Coach of the Year.
