The Douglas Southall Freeman Award for public affairs reporting went to WSLS-TV in Roanoke, public radio station WVTF in Roanoke and WINA-AM/WQMZ-FM in Charlottesville. WSLS won for "Moen Twins" by John Carlin and staff. Roanoke's WDBJ-TV won a meritorious award in the category for "End of Innocence" by Kelly Zuber and Grant Plaskon.
Individuals recognized for outstanding effort were Len Besthoff of WDBJ, Rob Graham of WINA and Ellen Reinhardt of WRVA-AM in Richmond.
Portsmouth station WAVY-TV, the NBC affiliate in Hampton Roads, was named Virginia's Outstanding News Operation of the Year for a third consecutive year. WRVA-AM in Richmond was named Outstanding News Operation for a second consecutive year among metro radio stations, while WINA-AM/WQMZ-FM, Charlottesville, won the top honor in nonmetro radio.
Metro encompasses all radio stations located in or licensed to cities with populations of 50,000 or more.
