TECH RUNNER SECOND IN METRO TOURNEY

Virginia Tech runner Dave Hannett won two events, finished second in four events and third in one at the Metro Conference Outdoor Championships at Tampa, Fla.

Hannett won the 100-meter dash in 11.04 seconds and the 110-meter hurdles in 15.66. He placed second in the long jump, high jump, 400-meter dash and 1,500-meter run to compile 143 points. Dave Norman of Virginia Commonwealth leads the competition with 116.

Unseeded Marilyn Baker of Washington and Lee knocked off No. 4 seed Gina Poligi of Trenton Sate 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Division III women's tennis tournament at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. In the second round, Baker defeated Toshimi Sokamata of Nazareth (N.Y.) College 7-5, 6-4. Baker faces fifth-seeded Katja Zerek of Kenyon (Ohio) College today.
