ROCKBRIDGE BREAKS BYRD WIN STREAK

Rockbridge County broke William Byrd's 34-game regular-season winning streak with an 11-5 baseball victory Saturday in Lexington.

Gary Tyree (4-1) pitched a complete game for the Wildcats, scattering eight hits, striking out six and walking four. Tyree also hit a grand slam in the second inning that gave Rockbridge a 5-2 advantage.

Second baseman Kevin Staton was 2-for-4 for the Wildcats (8-7) with a home run and four RBI.

Michael Miguire hit a home run and Kevin Saunder added two hits for the Terriers (15-1).

In other high school sports:

At North Cross, the Raiders recorded two shutout victories to win their fifth straight Virginia Independent Conference soccer championship, beating Hargrave Military Academy 5-0 in the title game. Carter Teague had two goals and Mark Roberts added three assists for North Cross (17-1-2). Goalkeeper John Kinney preserved the shutout. In the semifinals, Jamie Bell had two goals as North Cross defeated Miller School 7-0, and Mike Cunningham scored the winning goal as Hargrave Military beat Fishburne Military 2-1.

At Wytheville, Jason Bowles had three goals as George Wythe defeated Giles 4-2 for the first Region C soccer title.

George Wythe (6-5-1) won a nail-biter in its semifinal with Glenvar. After tying at 2 at the end of regulation, the teams played through two scoreless overtimes and a scoreless sudden death period before sophomore Jim Bob Hartlage gave the Maroons a 3-2 victory in the second sudden-death period. Bowles scored both goals in regulation and Glenvar's Brad Van Ravestein had both for the Highlanders.

Jeffrey Bourne, playing his first game as goalie, had 19 saves.

Giles blanked James River 8-0 in the other semifinal.

At River's Edge, Cave Spring defeated Patrick Henry 8-1 to claim the Roanoke Valley District boys' tennis title. Earning singles victories for the Knights were Ben Gold, Randy Price, Jaraed Dunkins, Bill Rawlings and Jason Vialck.

Louis Davidson and Carlisle Stull won the final doubles match 8-6 to give North Cross the team championship at the Virginia Independent Conference tennis tournament held at Eastern Mennonite High School in Harrisonburg. The Raiders beat LCA 5-4 for the title. Aaron Marley and Scott LoFranco were selected to the all-tournament team. Marley, LoFranco and Stull won singles matches in the final, and Pira Kanithanon and LoFranco won their doubles match 8-6.

North Cross completed an undefeated season by beating Lynchburg Christian 8-1 in the Virginia Independent Conference girls' tennis tournament finals at Stuart Hall in Staunton. Anne Lemon, Armistead Lemon and Elizabeth Noland were selected all-conference and all-tournament for North Cross. Kay Dougherty was chosen coach of the year, and Armistead Lemon and Katheryn Anthony were undefeated all season. North Cross defeated Stuart Hall 8-1 in the tournament semifinals.

Emily deGuzman hit two singles and had two RBI as Holy Cross downed Roanoke Valley Christian 5-1 in the Blue Ridge Conference softball tournament final.

Stephanie Webb hit a home run to give the Eagles their lone score.

Webb helped Roanoke Valley Christian to a 7-0 victory over Lynchburg Christian Academy in the semifinals with a two-run triple. Teammate Amy Ford went 2-for-3 with four RBI.

In the other semifinal, Holy Cross downed Timberlake 14-1. Lynchburg Christian defeated Timberlake 12-9 in the third-place game.

Lynchburg Christian Academy scored nine runs in the bottom of the ninth as the Bulldogs routed Holy Cross 15-3 to capture the Virginia Independent Conference baseball title.

The Bulldogs (15-1 overall, 12-0 Virginia Independent) downed Roanoke Valley Christian 12-8 in a semifinal match. The Eagles (8-6, 7-5) outhit Lynchburg Christian 12-9 but committed seven errors to give up eight unearned runs. The Bulldogs scored six in the bottom of the fourth inning to break open the game.

In the other semifinal, Holy Cross defeated Eastern Mennonite 8-6.

At Woodbridge, Lisa Tolin scored two goals that helped Woodbridge beat Cave Spring 3-1 in a girls' soccer game. Gail Griffin scored the second-half goal for the Knights (10-1-2) on an assist by Aimee Beightol. Amy Hollar had 24 saves in goal for Cave Spring.
