TECH TAKES 7-STROKE LEAD IN METRO TOURNEY

Virginia Tech fired a 290 team score as the Hokies opened a seven-stroke lead over defending champion South Florida after the first round of the Metro Conference Golf Championship at Seabrook Island, S.C., on Saturday.

Virginia Tech was paced by a pair of par-72s from Brian Sharp and Tom Graziano over the 6,832-yard Crooked Oaks Course.

Virginia Commonwealth carded a third-place 300, followed by Southern Mississippi at 302, UNC-Charlotte at 304, Louisville at 312 and Tulane at 318.

In other college golf:

Virginia's Tripp Shreves shot a closing round 69 and finished tied for sixth at 143 at the Wofford Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C. The Cavaliers finished tied for fourth in the team competition at 584.

N.C. State's Mark Slawter shot 139 to finish first, edging South Carolina teammates Carl Paulson and David Seawell by two shots.

The Wolfpack placed three golfers in the top seven to take the team title with a 573 total. Clemson was second at 574 with North Florida six shots back. Tied for fourth with Virginia were Wake Forest and South Carolina. Duke was seventh (589) followed by Liberty (603) and Wofford (616).

Virginia's Simon Cooke was at 146, tied for 14th. Dan Ladd shot 149 and Jimmy Flippen and Dean Smith finished at 153.
