OBIT WHITMAN, ROBERT PIERCE SR.

WHITMAN, Robert Pierce Sr., 68, of Route 1 (Robinson Tract Raod), Pulaski, died Friday night, May 14, 1993, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. Mr. Whitman was a longtime Pulaski County dairy farmer, and grading and excavating contractor. He was born March 8, 1925, in Pulaski, and was the son of the late E. Pierce Whitman. He was a graduate of Augusta Military Academy and he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg. Mr. Whitman was a veteran of World War II, having served with the Army Amphibian Engineers in the Pacific Theatre. After his discharge from the service he returned to work on the home farm. In 1955, he founded a grading and excavating business which he owned and operated for 35 years until his retirement. He also continued to operate his dairy farm during this time. Mr. Whitman was a member and chairman of the Pulaski County Planning Commission for several years and represented the Robinson District as a member of the Pulaski County Board of Supervisors for two terms, 1980 through 1987. He was a member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Pulaski Elks Lodge #1067. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Pulaski, a member of the Pulaski Science Club and a longtime member of the America Saddlebred Horse Show Association. Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Bailey Whitman, Pulaski; mother, Ellen Robinson Whitman, Pulaski; one son, Robert P. Whitman Jr., Pulaski; two daughters, Jeanne P. Whitman, Dallas, Texas, Sarah Whitman Hadacek, Mt. Solon; two grandchildren, John D. Whitman and Julia P. Whitman, Pulaski; first cousin, Cynthia C. Andrews, Hampton. A graveside service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. from the Thornspring United Methodist Church Cemetery, Pulaski, County, with the Rev. Richard Bethune officiating. The famiy will receive friends Sunday at Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that memorials be made to the E. Pierce Whitman Memorial Scholarship Fund at NRCC, P.O. Drawer 1127, Dublin, Va. 24084, or to the charity of ones choice. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Inc., Pulaski.
