WILLIAMS STANDS FOR NO NONSENSE

RECENTLY I had the opportunity to meet GOP gubernatorial candidate Earle Williams when he visited our area. I can't emphasize enough how impressed I was with his direct approach to answering questions. If you asked a "yes or no" question, you got a "yes or no" answer.

His opponent, George Allen, can't sum up anything in less than 2,000 words. Typical political speak will not win against Mary Sue Terry. Compared to Williams' no-nonsense approach, Allen will clearly be perceived in the general election as a typical politician.

Indeed, Allen once stated that he'd like to stay in Congress until the day he dies, only to be gerrymandered out of his seat. The job of Virginia's chief executive should not be a second priority in anyone's career.

The two most important things that we should be looking at is who can win in November and who would be the best governor. Let's not forget our past mistakes and lose a fourth election. Williams' appeal would be great, and as governor he could turn this state around. His experience is unmatched among the candidates in both parties. What a strange concept - real-world experience in government. DAVID F. BRUGGER BLACKSBURG
