MAN SHOOTS SON, MISTAKEN FOR TURKEY

A 66-year-old Franklin County man was charged with reckless handling of a firearm after he mistakenly shot and wounded his son while turkey hunting, a spokesman for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries said Sunday.

Lt. Karl Martin said the accident occurred about 7 a.m. Saturday near Union Hall when William Robertson of Penhook fired his gun at what he thought was a turkey.

Johnny Robertson, 37, was struck in the right arm and shoulder area with approximately 20 pellets from a No. 4 shot.

He was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital and then to Roanoke Memorial Hospital where he was listed in good condition.
