FLAMES CLAIM BIG SOUTH TITLE

Rich Humphrey allowed three hits and one run in six innings in leading Liberty to a 6-1 victory over Radford and the Big South Conference baseball tournament title Sunday in Conway, S.C.

The Flames, 23-23, went 5-1 in the tournament and received the Big South's automatic bid to one of the eight NCAA Regional tournaments beginning May 27.

Humphrey (8-4) had one strikeout and one walk in working his third game in four days, coming up with two wins and one save.

His effort was cut short Sunday when he was struck by two balls hit back to the mound. With one out in the sixth, Denny Van Pelt lined a shot off Humphrey's shin. He recovered to throw out Van Pelt at first.

Brian Pardue lined the next pitch off Humphrey's chest where it popped in the air and was caught by third baseman Bill Speek.

Humphrey left the game and was taken to the hospital for X-rays.

Radford finished the season 29-19.

On Saturday, Todd Martin threw 6 innings for Liberty and slammed a home run as the Flames defeated Radford 13-5 in the first game of the championship round.

Martin (1-0), who had not pitched a game this season, gave up seven hits, three earned runs, three walks and one strikeout. The teams were tied at 1-1 when the Flames got eight runs in the fourth inning. Charlie Kim smashed a two-run double and Beau Martin blasted a two-run homer.

Jay Hensley (3-3) was the losing pitcher for Radford.

\ ACC TOURNAMENT: Virginia, which squandered a 5-1 lead in losing to top-ranked North Carolina State 7-5 in the first round of the ACC baseball tournament, staved off elimination Sunday with an 8-7 win over Wake Forest in Greenville, S.C. Frank Lankford went nine innings and struck out 12 for UVa, which blew a 6-2 lead before scoring in the bottom of the ninth inning to break a 7-7 tie.
