TECH GOLFERS MAINTAIN METRO LEAD

Virginia Tech shot a second-round total of 300 and remained the leader at the Metro Conference men's golf championships Sunday in Seabrook, S.C., where strong winds caused higher scores at the Crooked Oaks golf course.

Tech's Clayton Friend, with two rounds of 73, is in a group of five players at 146, two strokes behind leader Mike Benner of Virginia Commonwealth. Also for the Hokies, Tom Graziano is at 147, Lewis Conner 148, Brian Sharp 149 and Sean Farrell 151.

Tech, which shot 290 on Saturday, is being chased by Virginia Commonwealth, in second at 596 and South Florida at 604. UNC Charlotte is fourth at 607, followed by Southern Mississippi (613), Louisville (617) and Tulane (623).

The final round on the 6,832-yard, par-72 course will be played today.

In other college sports:

The Virginia Tech men's and women's teams placed fourth at the Metro track and field championships in Tampa, Fla.

Southern Mississippi won the men's portion of the meet with 152 points, followed by Virginia Commonwealth (142), South Florida (125) and Virginia Tech (123).

In women's competition, VCU was first with 146 points, followed by Tulane (144), Southern Miss (79) and Virginia Tech (74).

Tech freshman Chris Sieben finished second in the javelin with a heave of 191 feet, 8 inches. Mark Zesinger was third in the triple jump and Geof Tonini took fourth.

In action late Saturday, junior Nancy Gilmore won the women's discus competition with a conference-meet record throw of 140 feet, 11 inches.

Joe Edwards of the Hokies finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9 minutes, 26 seconds. Spencer Miller was third in the hammer throw (149-6) and Gordon Shetley was fourth.
