The Battling Bishops had their season low in goals Sunday, but managed to hold off the Generals 8-7 in the first round of the Division III NCAA tournament.
It was the third time in as many Division III tournament appearances that W&L has lost to Ohio Wesleyan, which beat the Generals 17-4 in 1987 and 19-10 in 1991.
"If anybody would have told me before the game that we'd hold them to eight goals, I would have said we would have won," W&L coach Jim Stagnitta said.
Ohio Wesleyan's previous low for goals this season was in a 13-12 loss to 12-time Division III champion Hobart. The Bishops had scored more than 18 goals per game before Sunday.
Ohio Wesleyan will meet ninth-ranked Washington College, which stunned No. 1 Salisbury State 12-11. The other semifinal will pit Hobart and defending champion Nazareth.
Sixth-ranked W&L (12-3) got as close on one goal on three occasions, the last on a shot by freshman midfielder Russell Croft.
"We had some opportunities and didn't necessarily cash in on them," said Stagnitta.
Brian Murtagh had 18 saves against Ohio Wesleyan, giving him 51 saves - as opposed to 19 goals allowed - in his last three games.
The Generals' Wiemi Douoguih had three goals to finish with 50 for the season and 101 in his career. Douoguih, who also had an assist, became the first W&L player in 20 years to score 50 goals in a season and he jumped into third place on the Generals' career goals list. Senior John Hunter's first-period goal extended his scoring streak to 45 games - two short of the school record. \
