3 KILLED IN PILEUP ON U.S. 1

Three people were killed and six others were injured Sunday when a pickup truck rear-ended two cars on U.S. 1, sending one into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer, the state police said.

According to state police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell, two cars were northbound on the highway and had slowed to make a left turn into a flea market.

A pickup, also northbound, plowed into the rear of one of the cars, sending it into the southbound lane where it was struck by a tractor-trailer. The three in that car, including a mother and son, were killed.

The pickup then struck the other car, injuring its four occupants.

The driver of the pickup truck, Arthur William Griffith, 32, of Hughesville, Md., was not hurt. Caldwell said Griffith has been charged with three counts of involuntary manslaughter and reckless driving. - Associated Press
