SCHOOLS HAVE MORE NURSES ON THE WAY
YOUR APRIL 18 editorial entitled "Still coming up short on nurses" provided
a succinct summary of the status of school-health nurses within the city
school system, yet it did not contain the School Board's complete plan for
addressing the need for school nurses. That plan not only included four
full-time equivalence worth of school nurses for the '93-'94 school year, but
includes adding four more in '94-'95 and four more in '95-'96. So, three years
from now we should have a full equivalent of one nurse per 1,000 students in
the school system.
This is an insightful plan that provides additional nurses incrementally
over a period of time, phasing in a school-wide health-nurse program.
