HOKIES OPEN METRO PLAY AGAINST VCU

Virginia Tech's opener in the 18th annual Metro Conference baseball tournament at The Diamond is scheduled Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. against host Virginia Commonwealth.

The Hokies (34-13) finished in a second-place tie with Southern Mississippi in the Metro regular season, but received the No. 3 seed because the Golden Eagles won two out of three over the weekend at Tech.

South Florida (40-16) is the top seed in the seven-team, double-elimination tournament and receives a first-round bye. Tulane, UNC Charlotte, VCU and Louisville are the fourth through seventh seeds, respectively. Tulane is the defending champion.

The tournament is scheduled through Saturday, with a potential Sunday game, if necessary. The schedule: WEDNESDAY 1, Tulane (21-29 overall, 8-7 Metro) vs. UNC Charlotte (21-29, 6-11), 11 a.m. 2, Southern Mississippi (32-24, 11-6) vs. Louisville (17-39, 3-11), 3 p.m. 3, Virginia Tech (34-13, 11-6) vs. VCU (26-25, 4-10), 7:30 p.m. THURSDAY 4, Two lowest-seeded Wednesday losers meet, 11 a.m. 5, South Florida (40-16, 13-5) vs. Tulane-UNCC winner, 3 p.m. 6, Southern Miss-Louisville winner vs. Va.
