GRAYSON WHITEWASHES GALAX

Grayson County defeated host Galax 13-0 Monday to clinch second place in the Mountain Empire District.

Mack Campbell struck out 11 and threw a one-hitter over five innings. Chad Shaffner went 3-for-3 to lead the offense for Grayson.

The Mountain Empire District tournament opens today with two games and four more on Thursday at the highest seed. The semifinals and finals will be played next week at Calfee Park in Pulaski.

In other baseball:

At Stuart, Patrick County defeated Dan River 8-5 in a Piedmont District game. Freshman Kevin Mabe, in his first varsity outing, went the distance for the win. He gave up four hits and struck out nine.

Andy Stanley homered for the Cougars (9-7, 9-7) while Zach Kreager tripled in two runs. Chris Redd went 2-for-3, Chris Stanley was 3-for-4 and Doug Martin was 2-for-2 with two RBI.

At Hot Springs, freshman Jon Rodgers pitched 3 1/3 innings of two-hit relief to earn the win in Bath County's 5-3 non-district victory over Shawsville. The Chargers (7-6) scored three runs in the fourth inning to help give Rodgers his sixth win of the season. The Shawnees are 11-6.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: At Galax, Frankie Turpin of Floyd County defeated Rusty Newby of Giles 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 to win the Group A Mountain Empire District championship. In the semifinals, Turpin beat Chuck Swaha of Grayson County, 6-0, 6-2 and Newby stopped Shane Brim of Galax 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. In doubles, Floyd County's Turpin and Evan Arno teamed to beat Giles' Newby and Jason Borillo 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. In the semifinals Turpin and Arno beat Galax's Brim and Stevie Grimes 3-6, 7-5, 8-6 while Newby and Borillo stopped Grayson County's Swaha and Derek Gunter 6-4, 6-1. Galax won the team championship in the regular season. All winners advance to the Region C tournament.

At Magna Vista, Fieldale-Collinsville defeated Magna Vista 5-1 and Bassett stopped Martinsville 5-1 in the Piedmont District boys' team semifinals.

In the singles competition, Stuart Cox of Fieldale-Collinsville defeated Magna Vista's Paul Gallimore 6-2, 5-7, 6-0 and Brian Biga of Martinsville stopped Mike Weaver of Bassett 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles competition, Cox and Brad Tilley of Fieldale-Collinsville beat Chad Marion and Richard Carlson of Patrick County 6-0, 6-0 and Mark Jones and Weaver of Bassett defeated Gallimore and Jay Patel of Magna Vista 6-7 (7-5), 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

Championship matches will be played Wednesday.

\ SOFTBALL:At Covington, Lord Botetourt (12-3, 8-1) defeated Alleghany 15-6 in a Blue Ridge District game as Susan Wyche went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs. Janell Sowers got the win with a complete-game five-hitter. Alleghany is 6-9 overall, 3-6 in the district.

At Shell Park, Jennie Kallio struck out six and pitched a five-hitter as Cave Spring beat Franklin County 3-0 to clinch the Roanoke Valley District regular season title. The victory assured the Knights (13-2, 8-0) of a spot in the Group AAA Northwestern Region tournament.

Beth Drombetta led the offense with two hits in four trips. Franklin County, finishing 4-4 in the district, was paced by Tammy Burgess with a double and a single.

At River's Edge, Patrick Henry defeated William Fleming 23-8 in a Roanoke Valley District game. The Patriots (4-10, 4-4) were led by Courtney Stump, who went 3-for-4 while driving in four runs. Jodie Hyler was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Fleming is 0-14, 0-8.

\ SOCCER: At Martinsville, Jimmy Boitnott and Brian Shively scored first-half goals for Fieldale-Collinsville and the Cavaliers (1-6-1) held off Magna Vista 2-1 in the first round of the Piedmont District tournament. The Warriors (1-7) got their goal from Brant Hensley in the first half.

At Salem, Griffin Cross scored three goals to power Salem past Rockbridge County 5-1 in the first round of the Blue Ridge District tournament. Andrew Bailey and Owen Woodward also scored for Salem, which will meet William Byrd at Lord Botetourt on Wednesday in the semifinals.
