Kmart Corp., Troy, Mich.-based retailer operating discount stores, Office Max and Waldenbooks shops in Roanoke and Salem, reported first-quarter net income before an extraordinary charge and the effects of accounting changes of $50 million, or 11 cents a share, down 57.1 percent % from $116 million, or 26 cents a share, in the 1992 quarter. Sales reached $9.03 billion, up 9.2 percent from $8.27 billion.
The extraordinary charge was $10 million from early redemption of $200 million of 10 1/2 percent Sinking Fund Debentures due Dec. 1, 2017.
