CAVE SPRING WINS SOFTBALL TITLE

Jennie Kallio struck out six and pitched a five-hitter as Cave Spring beat Franklin County 3-0 Monday at Shell Park. The Knights have clinched the Roanoke Valley District regular season title.

The victory assured the Knights (13-2, 8-0) of a spot in the Group AAA Northwestern Region tournament. Beth Drombetta led the offense with two hits in four trips. Franklin County, finishing 4-4 in the district, was paced by Tammy Burgess with a double and a single.

In other softball:

At Bedford, Carla Goff pitched a one-hitter and Nicole Shackleford drove in three runs as Liberty blasted Altavista 15-0. The Minettes are 13-3-1; Altavista ended its regular season at 0-18.

\ BASEBALL: At Galax, Grayson County defeated host Galax 13-0 to clinch second place in the Mountain Empire District. Mack Campbell struck out 11 and threw a one-hitter over five innings. Chad Shaffner went 3-for-3 to lead the offense for Grayson.

The Mountain Empire District tournament opens today with two games and four more on Thursday at the highest seed. The semifinals and finals will be played next week at Calfee Park in Pulaski.

At Pearisburg, Tazewell defeated Giles 6-3 in 10 innings in a non-district game. Scott Phipps drove in the go-ahead run and earned the win for Tazewell, which was second to Richlands in the Group AA Southwest District. Matt McGuire paced Giles with a leadoff homer in the first inning. Giles is 10-5 overall and the Spartans are regular season Mountain Empire District champions.

At Altavista, Liberty needed only a four-run second inning to defeat Altavista 4-2 in a Seminole District game. Mike Thompson's single drove in two runs for the Minutemen (12-5) and Jeremiah Hunt also singled in a run. Johnny Cash and Jamie Dooley combined on a 5-hitter. The Colonels are 2-16.

At Hot Springs, freshman Jon Rodgers pitched 3 1/3 innings of two-hit relief to earn the win in Bath County's 5-3 non-district victory over Shawsville. The Chargers (7-6) scored three runs in the fourth inning to help give Rodgers his sixth win of the season. The Shawnees are 11-6.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: At Galax, Frankie Turpin of Floyd County defeated Rusty Newby of Giles 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 to win the Group A Mountain Empire District championship. In the semifinals, Turpin beat Chuck Swaha of Grayson County, 6-0, 6-2 and Newby stopped Shane Brim of Galax 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. In doubles, Floyd County's Turpin and Evan Arno teamed to beat Giles' Newby and Jason Borillo 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. In the semifinals Turpin and Arno beat Galax's Brim and Stevie Grimes 3-6, 7-5, 8-6 while Newby and Borillo stopped Grayson County's Swaha and Derek Gunter 6-4, 6-1. Galax won the team championship in the regular season. All winners advance to the Region C tournament.

\ SOCCER: At Franklin County, Cave Spring defeated Patrick Henry 2-1 in a Roanoke Valley District playoff. Sam Yoshida gave the Patriots a 1-0 lead off a corner kick with 13 minutes left.

Less than a minute later Bobby Warnick was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick, which he made to make it 1-1. With less than eight minutes left, Cave Spring sweeper Martin Semansky cleared a long pass to Jimmy Garcerant. He dribbled in and put in a lob over the goalie's head for the winner.

The Knights are 9-4-1 and is in the Group AAA Northwestern Region.

The district tournament starts today at Cave Spring. Cave Spring plays the William Fleming-Franklin County winner at 5 p.m. and at 7 p.m., Pulaski County meets Patrick Henry. Both RVD championship games are set for Wednesday at 5 and 7. Patrick Henry plays Cave Spring for the girls' championship in the opener.

At Rocky Mount, William Fleming defeated Franklin County 2-1 in the first round of the Roanoke Valley District tournament.

Fleming's Kelly Graham gave the Colonels a 1-0 lead after the half. Then Franklin County's Keith Mattson tied the game before Fleming won it on a goal by Van Cao.

At Salem, Griffin Cross scored three goals to power Salem past Rockbridge County 5-1 in the first round of the Blue Ridge District tournament. Andrew Bailey and Owen Woodward also scored for Salem.
