Sam Yoshida gave the Patriots a 1-0 lead off a corner kick with 13 minutes left. Less than a minute later Bobby Warnick was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick, which he made to make it 1-1. With less than eight minutes left, Cave Spring sweeper Martin Semansky cleared a long pass to Jimmy Garcerant. He dribbled in and put in a lob over the goalie's head for the winner.
The Knights are 9-4-1 and advance to the Group AAA Northwestern Region.
The district tournament starts today at Cave Spring. Cave Spring plays the William Fleming-Franklin County winner at 5 p.m. at 7 p.m., Pulaski County meets Patrick Henry. Both RVD championship games are set for Wednesday at 5 and 7. Patrick Henry plays Cave Spring for the girls' championship in the opener.

At Rocky Mount, William Fleming defeated Franklin County 2-1 in the first round of the Roanoke Valley District tournament.
Fleming's Kelly Graham gave the Colonels a 1-0 lead after the half. Franklin County's Keith Mattson tied the game before Fleming won it on a goal by Van Cao.
At Northside, J.J. Larson scored three goals to lead Northside to a 7-3 victory over Alleghany in the first round of the Blue Ridge District Tournament. Ryan Wickstrom and Igor Marcello each added two goals for the Vikings (6-6-2) and Aaron Curfiss had two assists. For Alleghany (3-10), Brad Bizell scored two goals and Ed Deeds had two assists. Northside takes on Lord Botetourt in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
At Salem, Griffin Cross scored three goals to power Salem past Rockbridge County 5-1 in another BRD tournament first-round game. Andrew Bailey and Owen Woodward also scored for Salem, which will meet William Byrd at Lord Botetourt on Wednesday in the semifinals.
\ SOFTBALL: Jennie Kallio struck out six and pitched a five-hitter as Cave Spring beat Franklin County 3-0 Monday at Shell Park. The Knights have clinched the Roanoke Valley District regular season title.
The victory assured the Knights (13-2, 8-0) of a spot in the Group AAA Northwestern Region tournament. Beth Drombetta led the offense with two hits in four trips. Franklin County, finishing 4-4 in the district, was paced by Tammy Burgess with a double and a single.
At Covington, Lord Botetourt (12-3, 8-1) defeated Alleghany 15-6 in a Blue Ridge District game as Susan Wyche went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs. Janell Sowers got the win with a complete-game five-hitter. Alleghany is 6-9 overall, 3-6 in the district.
At River's Edge, Patrick Henry defeated William Fleming 23-8 in a Roanoke Valley District game. The Patriots (4-10, 4-4) were led by Courtney Stump, who went 3-for-4 while driving in four runs. Jodie Hyler was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Fleming is 0-14, 0-8.
\ BASEBALL: At Buchanan, Jason Anderson threw a three-hitter and struck out 14 to lead Glenvar to a 12-2 Pioneer District victory over James River. Anderson was also 2-for-5 at the plate with a double and 2 RBI. Catcher Joey Hutton was 3-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI and David Henderson added two runs on two doubles for the Highlanders (7-4-1 overall, 7-3 district). The Knights are 7-7 and 7-4.
At Galax, Grayson County defeated host Galax 13-0 on the losers' field Monday to clinch second place in the Mountain Empire District. Mack Campbell struck out 11 and threw a one-hitter over five innings. Chad Shaffner went 3-for-3 to lead the offense for Grayson.
The Mountain Empire District tournament opens today with two games and four more on Thursday at the highest seed. The semifinals and finals will be played next week at Calfee Park in Pulaski.
At Pearisburg, Tazewell defeated Giles 6-3 in 10 innings in a non-district game. Scott Phipps drove in the go-ahead run and earned the win for Tazewell. Matt McGuire paced Giles with a leadoff homer in the first inning. Giles is 10-5 overall and the regular-season Mountain Empire District champions.
