Juvenile and Domestic Relations Judge David Summerfield on Monday convicted Chad Hawkins of Wise and sentenced him to a juvenile detention facility until his 18th birthday.
Defense attorney Don Earls filed to appeal the verdict to Circuit Court. Officials said the case likely will be heard in July or August.
Hawkins was allowed to remain free on $50,000 bond.
Hawkins testified that he stabbed Jackie R. Bolling, 58, on Jan. 27 because the man had been abusing him and his mother, Pearl Bolling.
"I didn't mean to kill him," Hawkins said. "I just meant to hurt him enough to get him away from her."
Wise County sheriff's investigators testified that when they arrived at the house, Pearl Bolling had no marks that might have been associated with the violent struggle she and her son described.
"I look at this case and I see it as an American tragedy," Summerfield said. "Yet it required a great deal of force to take a man's life away."
