Rita Dove, an English professor at the University of Virginia, was appointed Tuesday as the Dove Library of Congress' poet laureate for a year.

Dove, 40, will be the second woman to hold the position since it was created in 1985, replacing that of "consultant in poetry." She will succeed Mona Van Duyn in October.

James H. Billington, the Librarian of Congress, called Dove "an accomplished and already widely recognized poet in mid-career whose work gives special promise to explore and enrich contemporary American poetry."

Dove won the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for a book of poetry, "Thomas and Beulah."
