VIRGINIA SPONG, WIFE OF FORMER SENATOR, DIES

She died Saturday of cancer at her home in Portsmouth.

A native of San Diego, Virginia Spong graduated from Cornell University. She studied urban planning at the University of London and the University of Virginia.

A former social worker for Portsmouth, she was a member of the Garden Club of Virginia and local garden clubs. She also was a member of Court Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth.

A memorial service was to be held at 11 a.m. today in Portsmouth.
