3 HOKIES HONORED BY METRO

Virginia Tech senior outfielder J.R. Hawkins was named first-team All-Metro Conference and Hokies sophomore third baseman Bo Durkac was picked Metro Newcomer of the Year on the eve of today's start of the conference tournament in Richmond.

Hawkins, a second-teamer last season, was the only Tech player to make the first team. Hawkins ranked among the league leaders in batting average (.350), runs batted in (46), home runs (10) and doubles (15).

Durkac, a transfer from North Carolina, leads the conference and is ranked nationally in hitting with a .428 average. Durkac, a native of Kittanning, Pa., has recorded more than 20 multiple-hit hit games this season.

Sophomore shortstop Dee Dalton of Roanoke joined Durkac as Tech's two selections on the second team.

South Florida dominated the first-team selections, placing a league-high six players on the team selected by the Metro Conference Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association.

Junior first baseman Darren Stumberger of South Florida was chosen the league's Most Valuable Player. Eddie Cardieri, who led the Bulls to their first league regular-season title, was named Metro Coach of the Year.
