RABID WILDLIFE REPORTED IN FLOYD COUNTY

Five rabid raccoons and one rabid fox have been reported in Floyd County this year, according to the New River Health District. In most cases, the raccoons were seen during the day showing aggressive behavior toward dogs, said Health Director Dr. Margaret Robinson.

About 85 percent of all reported cases of animal rabies occur in such wildlife as skunks, foxes, raccoons and bats. The health department recommends that animal owners vaccinate dogs and cats against rabies and that people stay away from strays.

People who have been bitten or scratched by a wild or domestic animal should wash the wound with soap and water and contact a doctor or health department for treatment advice. If possible, the animal should be confined for an animal-control.
