Virginia Tech's Marcus Kramer lost in the first round of the NCAA tennis tournament in Athens, Ga., ending his collegiate playing career with a singles record of 79-39. Michael Kirsten of Alabama-Birmingham defeated Kramer 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. Kramer, a two-time academic All-American and three-time All-Metro selection, was the first Hokie in 15 years to be invited to the 64-player tournament.
The Ferrum baseball team will play Guilford today at noon in the Division III South Region playoffs, which are being held in Rocky Mount. At 4 p.m., Methodist (N.C.) will meet North Carolina Wesleyan in the region's other first-round game.
The losers of Thursday's games will play at noon on Friday and the winners will play at 4 p.m. The tournament continues Saturday and Sunday with a double-elimination format.
The scheduled first round of the 18th annual Metro Conference baseball tournament in Richmond was postponed Wednesday by rain and wet grounds at The Diamond.
A triple-header was to have opened the tournament, with Virginia Tech and Virginia Commonwealth meeting in a night game. Tournament officials rescheduled the Tech-VCU game for 5 p.m. today, when the Metro will try to squeeze in four contests starting with Tulane-UNC Charlotte at 10 a.m. and Louisville-Southern Mississippi at 1 p.m.
