FLORIDA STOPS INSURERS FROM CANCELING POLICIES

Florida froze all homeowner insurance cancellations Wednesday, a day after outraged consumers berated the state government for allowing insurers to flee because of hurricane losses.

"Florida consumers are facing a big problem," said state Insurance Commissioner Tom Gallagher. "Insurance companies are retreating from the potential of another hurricane, while homeowners in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew are urgently needing coverage."

Gallagher barred the state's 300 property insurers from canceling coverage due to hurricane risk for 90 days, exempting companies only if the restriction would trigger insolvency.
