BUCCANEERS TOP RED SOX

Shortstop Tony Womack drove in the winning run in the seventh inning and Salem got three innings of one-hit relief Wednesday afternoon in a 4-1 Carolina League baseball victory over Lynchburg.

Buccaneers' starter Mariano De los Santos improved to 4-2 after six strong innings. De los Santos allowed five hits, one walk and one unearned run while striking out five.

Jim Martin, Sean Evans and Jason Christiansen combined to shut out the Red Sox in the final three innings. Christiansen walked three in the ninth inning, but worked out of the jam to record his third save.

Lynchburg got its only run in the first inning when Doug Hecker singled home Randy Brown, who had reached on an error by third baseman Kevin Polcovich.

The Bucs tied the score in the fourth when Ken Bonifay's ground out plated Marcus Ponder. Ponder reached on an infield single, stole second and took third on a throwing error by the catcher.

Womack's sacrifice fly in the seventh scored Jeff Conger with the go-ahead run. The Bucs tacked on two runs in the eighth inning on Bonifay's fourth homer of the season and an RBI single by Conger.
