$2.1 MILLION GRANT IS LURE FOR LEGO PARK

The state has awarded Prince William County a $2.1 million grant that will pay for development at a site where Lego Group is considering building its first U.S. theme park.

The economic development grant will pay for sewer, water and road extensions to the Cherry Hill peninsula, where Lego may construct the $100 million, child-oriented theme park. The county's competitor is Carlsbad, Calif.

The county plans to pay $1.7 million to cover Lego's fees for rezoning, site plans and water and sewer hookups. It also will pay for plans for a commuter rail station near the site and engineering costs of the Potomac Parkway, a proposed four-lane road that would connect the park to U.S. 1 and Interstate 95.

The grant came from a special economic development fund established by Gov. Douglas Wilder, who made the final decision to award the money.
