CLEMSON COACH SUSPENDED

Clemson coach Bill Wilhelm was suspended Wednesday by the Atlantic Coast Conference before the championship game with North Carolina State for critical remarks about umpires a day earlier.

Wilhelm's comments followed a controversial ending to Tuesday's victory against North Carolina. Clemson outfielder Billy McMillon made a sliding grab that was first called a catch by third base umpire Hank Rountree. After a discussion with the rest of the umpires, Rountree changed it to a hit.

The Clemson coach did not specifically criticize Rountree or the rest of the crew, but spoke out Tuesday against those umpires "who spend minimal time preparing to come out here and then come out here half asleep or hung over and don't really give a damn or have any pride in their work."

The league said Wilhelm's comments violated the conference's sportsmanlike conduct code.

Earlier this season, Wilhelm was suspended for one game by the league for criticizing specific umpires.

Assistant coach Jack Leggett took over for Wilhelm in the ACC title game.
