LIBRARIES TO USE GRANT FOR LITERACY PROGRAM

The Roanoke and Roanoke County libraries will receive a joint 18-month grant of $8,500 to participate in the Bell Atlantic/American Library Association Family Literacy Project.

The grant, which extends through October 1994, will be used to develop a local family literacy program.

The project will select families composed of children 8 and younger whose parents have reading difficulties. The families will be identified through referrals from private and public agencies.

The objective is to promote reading as an enjoyable, viable family activity by encouraging parents to read with their children.

The libraries will also present a training seminar for other librarians and literacy providers in their area.

Bell Atlantic and the association have funded 77 projects in 55 communities since 1990. They have reached about 6,000 parents and children.
