POWER-LINE FOES GIVEN ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD

High-voltage power-line fighters in Virginia and West Virginia, connected through Arcs, an umbrella organization, have received a national award from Citizens Clearinghouse for Hazardous Waste at an Arlington meeting.

An Environmental Justice Award for the Grass Roots Hall of Fame was accepted by David and May Sligh, members of the Roanoke County Preservation League, a unit of Arcs, at the meeting last week.

Among more than 50 awards from the national group, this was the only one for a group engaged in a power-line struggle, according to May Sligh. Arcs and its member groups are opposing Appalachian Power Co.'s proposed high-voltage line from Oceana, W.Va., to Cloverdale.

Grover "Buddy" Mitchell, a leader of Citizens for the Preservation of Craig County, also was cited by the national organization, according to May Sligh.
