Women run marathon as cancer fund-raiser

Two employees of the Emergency Department at Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley ran the Boston Marathon April 19, raising $1,000 each for cancer research.

Darlene Rice, 37, of Troutville, and Jeannine Brinegar, 27, of Blacksburg, participated in the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge, a benefit for the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Cancer Research.

Brinegar, who worked at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and whose mother was treated there, decided with Rice to run the marathon as part of the institute's fund-raising effort. The money they raised was augmented by 50 percent in challenge money from the Weaver family of Boston.

Brinegar completed the race - her second - in four hours and 28 minutes. This was the first Boston Marathon for Rice, who finished in five hours and 20 minutes.
