SANITATION WORKER IS TOP PUBLIC WORKS EMPLOYEE

Thomas N. Page, a 17-year employee in the Solid Waste Department, has been named Roanoke's public works employee of the year for 1992-93. Roanoke City Council recently presented him a resolution and a $100 savings bond.

Page joined the city as a sanitation worker in 1975. Last year, he passed his commercial driver's license and began driving trucks on a backup basis, working in both refuse collection and recycling.

William Clark, public works director, said Page's willingness to go above and beyond his duties was exhibited in his recent assignment of operating the special leaf and Christmas tree collection trucks during November, December and January. Page worked many overtime hours and used his knowledge of city streets to do the job efficiently.

"Tom is an employee that the department can count on to helpout in whatever he's needed," Clark said. "He has exemplified dedicated and local service and is a worthy recipient of the award."

Page was selected from 21 employees who had been honored as employees of the quarter in the past year. Clark said the program is a way to recognize the services and contribution of employees in the public works department.
