GEORGE MASON BOARD OKS TUITION INCREASE

Tuition for students at George Mason University will rise 16 percent next year.

The Board of Visitors on Wednesday approved raising tuition for in-state students from $3,336 to $3,888 and for out-of-state students from $8,504 to $10,056.

The changes are effective with the 1993-94 school year.

George W. Johnson, president of the university, said the increases resulted from changing state policies toward college costs.

"There has been a major policy shift in the support of higher education in Virginia," Johnson said. He said the state share of higher education expenses has fallen in the last decade from 70 percent to 47 percent.
