"I never was offered the job," Braine said. "We [Braine and Iowa State officials] just decided that we're not going to continue the discussions any further."
Braine went to Ames, Iowa, for talks May 10-11 and was considered a front-runner for the position that became available when Iowa State decided not to renew the contract of athletic director Max Urick.
Braine indicated he had grown tired of the publicity surrounding the search.
"More than anything, it was the timing, the pressure, the media [that influenced the decision]," he said. "It's over. It's out of the picture. I'm staying at Tech."
Braine works on a renewable one-year letter of appointment from Tech, an arrangement that is viewed as one of the reasons for his interest in Iowa State. That has not changed, although Braine has been heartened by the response to his performance at Tech.
"The last three weeks - as far as what we've heard from alumni, fans and supporters - has been the most rewarding time we've spent at Tech," Braine said. "Carole [his wife] and I appreciate everything that's been said in our behalf."
