GILES RIPS AUBURN 17-2

Glenn Stowers had three hits and drove in three runs Thursday as top-seeded Giles defeated Auburn 17-2 in the first round of the Mountain Empire District baseball tournament in Pearisburg.

Patrick Steele and Shannon Pyles had three RBI each for Giles (11-5). Mitch Reed got the win for the Spartans, who meet fourth-seeded Floyd on Tuesday night at Calfee Park in Pulaski.

The Buffaloes took advantage of 10 Narrows errors and got a complete game from senior Mike Hill to beat the Green Wave 14-3.

The other semifinal will pit second-seeded Grayson County against third-seeded Fort Chiswell, a 5-2 winner over Shawsville in Max Meadows. Grayson County recorded its third one-hitter of the season and defeated Galax 10-0 in Independence. Senior B.W. Hill struck out eight batters and pitched a complete-game six-hitter for Fort Chiswell (10-4) and helped his cause with a three-run home run in the first inning.

In other baseball:

At Glenvar, sophomore Jake Weddle had a memorable first start, pitching a perfect game for Glenvar in the Highlanders' 10-0 victory over Highland in the first game of a doubleheader. Classmate Matt Woolwine, who was promoted with Weddle from the junior varsity, tossed a one-hitter as Glenvar beat Highland 7-0 in the second game. Weddle had 12 strikeouts in five innings and Woolwine struck out eight.

At Forest, junior Ryan Gilleland's second two-run home run of the game and ninth homer of the season gave Jefferson Forest (13-4) a 6-4 victory over Rustburg. Gilleland, who started the game at shortstop, was the winning pitcher in relief.

At Bedford, Scott Gillespie limited Liberty to two hits and struck out 11 batters in five innings as the Lancers (14-3) pounded Liberty 13-0. The Minutemen dropped to 12-6.

At Stuart, Tunstall made the most of five hits to defeat Patrick County 10-0 and finish the regular season with an 18-0 record.

At Wytheville, junior Jason Otey tossed a four-hitter to improve his record to 4-2 and the Maroons (8-10) got two hits each from juniors Brian Repass and Randy Blevins in an 11-1 victory over Radford. Blevins had two RBI.

At Buchanan, junior right-hander Chico Tolley tossed a three-hitter as James River blanked Craig County 6-0 in Pioneer District action.

At William Fleming, Derek Kemp belted a grand slam and Jason McNew cracked a three-run homer as Pulaski County shellacked the Colonels 16-1. Eric Yates and Joe Jarrells had three hits apiece for the Cougars (4-12) and Chris Heidt pitched a complete game. William Fleming (5-11) contributed to its demise with nine errors.

\ GIRLS' TENNIS: At Radford, junior Myra Stevenson defeated Stephanie Read 6-4, 6-1 in No. 1 singles and got Richlands (6-0) started on its way to a 6-3 victory over Blacksburg (11-3) in the Region IV tournament at the Dedmon Center. Richlands will meet Gate City, a 5-4 winner over Marion, in the region championship Tuesday at Sullivan South High in Kingsport.

Individual semifinals will be played today at the Dedmon Center. Stevenson will play Kathy Richardson of Radford in the singles semifinal at 2 p.m., and Richardson will team with Ashley Funk against Sara Lazenby and Lesley Roberts of Graham in the doubles.

\ SOCCER: Kevin Niday had two goals and Andy McCaskill added a goal and one assist as William Byrd defeated Northside 4-1 for the Blue Ridge District championship at Lord Botetourt. The game was scoreless for a half.

At Blacksburg, six players scored and Chris Evans had two assists as the Indians defeated Christiansburg 6-0 for the New River District championship. Blacksburg (13-0-2) led 3-0 at halftime. Christiansburg is 10-5-1.

Chris Schrader had two second-half goals to lead Brookville to a 2-1 victory over Rustburg in the Seminole District championship game at Liberty High School in Bedford. The Bees (10-4) advance to the Region III tournament at Liberty against Martinsville on Monday at 5 p.m. Northside and Bassett meet at 7 p.m.
