WAITE EARLY LEADER IN KEMPER

New Zealand native Grant Waite, who regained his PGA Tour card in January after a two-year absence, shot a bogey-free 66 Thursday to take a one-shot lead after the opening round of the Kemper Open in Potomac, Md.

Waite would more than double his career earnings of $134,689 with his first victory on the tour. His best finish was a tie for fourth at this year's Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic.

John Daly had a 40 on the front nine, finished at 77 and was disqualified for not signing his scorecard.

The University of Virginia's hopes for a second straight trip to the NCAA Division I men's tournament faded in the second round of the East Regional at Charlottesville Birdwood Golf Course. The Cavaliers were one of only six teams in the 22-team tournament to fail to break 300 Thursday, shooting a 301. Heading into today's final round, Virginia's 594 total left it in a tie for 14th place, 25 shots behind leading Clemson. The top 12 teams advance.

Clemson's 569 total leads North Carolina by two shots. Florida's Brian Gay shot a second-round 68 to take a one-shot lead in the individual race at 5-under-par 139. Danville's Jimmy Flippen leads the UVa contingent at 148.
